Highlights:

  • Manchester United experienced major highs and lows throughout 2024.
  • Amad Diallo ended the year in exceptional form.
  • Poor results led to significant changes in management.

For Manchester United, 2024 was a rollercoaster year filled with unforgettable victories and frustrating setbacks. February saw Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment officially approved, marking a new era for the club. In March, United clinched an extraordinary extra-time FA Cup victory over Liverpool and went on to lift the trophy in May. However, an eighth-place finish in the Premier League left fans disappointed.

Despite the struggles, Erik ten Hag retained his position and was rewarded with a new contract. Yet, a poor start to the 2024/25 season resulted in Ten Hag’s dismissal, with Ruben Amorim taking charge. Off the pitch, plans for a new Old Trafford were unveiled, set to be the centerpiece of a massive urban regeneration project. However, financial difficulties forced spending cuts and staff redundancies.

Best Player: Andre Onana

André Onana

In a team grappling with inconsistency, the goalkeeper often shines. Andre Onana was a standout performer throughout 2024, delivering crucial saves that kept United in contention time and again.

Although his form wavered slightly towards the end of the year, Onana’s contributions were invaluable. Ruben Amorim, reflecting on a key save against Ipswich Town, praised his keeper, emphasizing how Onana had saved the team on multiple occasions.

Most Improved Player: Amad Diallo

Amad Diallo

For Amad Diallo, 2024 was a transformative year at Manchester United. His dramatic extra-time winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup showcased his potential, and he finally received consistent opportunities late in the year.

Under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, Amad flourished, contributing 10 goals and assists in just nine appearances across November and December. His simple yet effective playing style proved highly impactful, making him one of the team’s most reliable attackers.

Best Young Player: Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo

At just 19 years old, Kobbie Mainoo has become a vital part of Manchester United’s midfield. The academy graduate has demonstrated maturity well beyond his years, becoming a key player for both club and country.

Mainoo’s impact was evident during England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, where his calm and composed performances anchored the midfield. United are now looking to build their future around this promising young talent.

Top Scorer: Rasmus Højlund

Rasmus Højlund

Rasmus Højlund carried significant expectations following his £72m move from Atalanta in 2023. Despite some ups and downs, the Danish forward showcased his potential, particularly in the Premier League.

Højlund began 2024 in scintillating form, scoring in six consecutive league games. Despite injury setbacks, he managed 17 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions, a solid return that hints at greater things to come.

Best Signing: Leny Yoro

Leny Yoro

Securing Leny Yoro was a major coup for United, especially after Real Madrid’s interest. The teenage defender, hailed as a generational talent, joined the club for £59m from Lille.

Although a preseason injury delayed his debut, Yoro’s potential to become a cornerstone of United’s defense is undeniable. His signing represents both immediate quality and long-term ambition.

Best Moment: Winning the FA Cup

Manchester City v Manchester United - Emirates FA Cup Final

United’s most memorable moment of 2024 was undoubtedly their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City. After a disappointing league campaign, few expected United to triumph at Wembley.

Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo secured a 2-1 victory, not only earning United silverware but also Europa League qualification. The win was particularly sweet as it came against their city rivals, who had dominated English football in recent years.

Despite the challenges, 2024 ended with glimmers of hope for Manchester United. With Ruben Amorim at the helm, the club is poised to rebuild and aim for greater success in the years ahead.
