Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has pointed out the broader team responsibility for the goal-scoring struggles of strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, emphasizing the need for better service from midfielders, wingers, and defenders alike.
Strikers Under Pressure
Both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have faced challenges in front of goal this season. Hojlund has managed just one goal in his last 14 Premier League appearances, while Zirkzee has scored twice, with both goals coming against Everton in December. In total, the duo has combined for only five league goals across 41 appearances this season.
Martinez, who scored United’s winning goal against Fulham, has acknowledged the pressure on the strikers but suggested the team must take collective responsibility for improving their goal contributions.
Martinez on the Team’s Role in Supporting Strikers
Speaking to reporters, Martinez highlighted the challenges faced by Hojlund and Zirkzee:
“Absolutely, we take the responsibility. I think we played many long balls to [Hojlund and Zirkzee], and for sure it’s tough for them, especially because they fight against two centre-backs. The centre-backs here in the Premier League are really difficult.”
Martinez further explained that while the strikers need to step up their performances, the team must ensure they are positioned better on the pitch:
“[Hojlund and Zirkzee] have to do better as well. They are really good players, but I think we have to continue [to do] more, and put them in better spaces on the pitch. We have to find them in the right places, dangerous places, to make them score.”
European Success vs Domestic Struggles
Interestingly, Hojlund has performed far better in European competition this season, scoring five goals in seven Europa League appearances. Similarly, his form in last year’s Champions League saw him score five times before netting just once in the Premier League.
Zirkzee, on the other hand, had a solid record for Bologna before joining United, contributing 12 goals and seven assists in Serie A and the Coppa Italia during the 2023/24 season.
What Needs to Change?
Martinez’s comments suggest that Manchester United’s struggles in front of goal are not just about individual performances but a broader issue of team coordination and strategy. Can Hojlund and Zirkzee turn things around with better support from their teammates?
