Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has shared his thoughts on the most underrated player in the team – central midfielder Manuel Ugarte. Despite a challenging season for both the club and the 22-year-old striker, Hojlund has praised Ugarte for his crucial yet often overlooked contributions.
Hojlund’s Own Struggles
Rasmus Hojlund’s season has not been smooth sailing. The £72m summer signing from Atalanta has scored only two Premier League goals in 19 appearances, and his place in the starting lineup has come under threat. With United continuing to face struggles under head coach Ruben Amorim, the Danish striker is under pressure to turn his form around and prove himself as a long-term fixture for the team.
Hojlund’s Praise for Ugarte

In an interview with Sky Sports, Hojlund was quick to name Ugarte as the most underrated player at Old Trafford. The Uruguayan international, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, has quietly been performing at a high level, despite often flying under the radar.
“Manu has also been very, very good,” Hojlund said. “You’re starting to see now that he’s performing on another level.” Ugarte, who worked with Amorim during their time at Sporting CP, has become a key player in United’s midfield, partnering with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo. His defensive contributions have been vital, taking on the anchor role once held by Casemiro.
Ugarte’s Growing Recognition
Although Manchester United’s results haven’t been ideal, Ugarte’s consistent performances are beginning to catch the attention they deserve. Hojlund emphasized that players who work hard behind the scenes often don’t receive the praise they should, and Ugarte is a prime example. “You see his quality, you see those workhorses in teams, they don’t get the appreciation they deserve,” he said.
As United’s midfield engine, Ugarte continues to provide stability and control, crucial elements in a team struggling to find form.
