  • Manchester United slump to a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton.
  • Bruno Fernandes’ penalty provides the only moment of solace in another dismal performance.
  • Goalkeeper Andre Onana’s costly error compounds Amorim’s frustrations.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has delivered a damning assessment of his side, labeling them “the worst team in the club’s history” after their 3-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

United’s struggles this season hit another low point as goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, and Georginio Rutter sealed Brighton’s victory, aided by a catastrophic mistake from Andre Onana. The defeat marks United’s sixth loss at home in the current campaign and adds to a growing sense of despair surrounding Amorim’s tenure.

Amorim Pulls No Punches

Speaking candidly in the post-match press conference, Amorim did not shy away from the harsh realities of United’s predicament.

“In ten Premier League games, we’ve won two,” he admitted. “Imagine what this feels like for the fans, for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.

“I am not going to change. I know we can succeed, but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now.

“We are the worst team, maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines, and I’m giving them to you because we have to acknowledge that and work to change it.”

Nervousness and Anxiety Holding United Back

Amorim also addressed the psychological toll of United’s poor form, emphasizing the nervousness within the squad:

“Our players are really nervous and anxious. When you step onto the pitch, you remember the last games here. If I feel it, the players feel it even more.

“It’s unacceptable to lose so many games for any Premier League club, let alone Manchester United. We have to suffer and continue working. There’s no other way.”

A Disappointing Start Under Amorim

Hired to replace Erik ten Hag in October, Amorim was tasked with turning United’s season around. However, his record of just five wins in 15 games across all competitions, coupled with seven defeats, has left fans questioning whether the former Sporting CP boss can reverse the club’s fortunes.

Despite brief glimpses of promise, including Amad Diallo’s heroics against Southampton earlier in the week, United remain mired in mediocrity, with morale and confidence at rock bottom.

Looking Ahead

With mounting pressure and increasingly vocal criticism, Amorim faces the unenviable task of steering United out of their current crisis. Whether he can inspire the squad and restore the club’s pride remains to be seen, but the road ahead looks long and arduous.
