Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney is reportedly close to signing a pre-contract agreement to return to his boyhood club, Celtic, on a free transfer this summer. The Scotland international’s Arsenal journey, marked by injuries and limited game time, appears to be drawing to a close as he eyes a homecoming to Glasgow.

Tierney’s Time at Arsenal

Tierney joined Arsenal from Celtic in 2019 for a reported fee of £25 million. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, the left-back’s time in North London has been plagued by fitness issues. He has missed significant chunks of every season due to injuries, with his most recent full campaign ending in a loan spell at Real Sociedad in La Liga. Unfortunately, injuries also hampered his impact in Spain.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has often favored players who can adapt to inverted full-back roles, leaving Tierney on the fringes of the squad. The Gunners have opted not to extend Tierney’s current deal, which is set to expire in June 2025.

Celtic’s Interest in Tierney

Celtic has been closely monitoring Tierney’s situation and looks set to welcome their former academy star back to Parkhead. Reports suggest Tierney is “on the verge” of agreeing to rejoin the Scottish champions, where he remains a beloved figure.

Tierney’s legendary toughness and commitment are well-remembered by Celtic fans. A particularly iconic moment came during the 2017 Scottish Cup final when he returned to lift the trophy after undergoing emergency dental surgery mid-match due to a facial injury.

Interest from Other Clubs

Before deciding on Celtic, Tierney reportedly attracted interest from Bayer Leverkusen, Sevilla, and Juventus. However, his deep connection to Celtic seems to have been the deciding factor in his decision to return to Scotland.

Other Arsenal Players Planning Their Futures

Tierney isn’t the only Arsenal player whose future is in question. Midfielders Thomas Partey and Jorginho are also in the final months of their contracts, with Jorginho considering a potential move during the January transfer window.
