CR7 Reflects on His Legendary Career
Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that his time at Real Madrid was the happiest period of his illustrious career. The Portuguese superstar, who turned 40 this week, has played for some of the biggest clubs in world football, including Sporting CP, Manchester United, Juventus, and currently Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
Speaking on Los Amigos de Edu, Ronaldo reflected on his nine-year spell in Madrid, where he won multiple Champions League and La Liga titles.
“Real Madrid Will Always Be in My Heart”
“Spain is my home, my children grew up there. It’s where I was happiest in football, and I will always have Madrid in my heart,” Ronaldo said.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also spoke about his lasting legacy at Santiago Bernabéu, emphasizing how younger fans still watch his highlights on YouTube.
“I did some really nice things, and people don’t forget. The younger kids still watch my goals, my celebrations… even my son Mateo watches football videos and teases me by saying he’s better than me!”
Why Ronaldo Left Real Madrid in 2018
Despite his unforgettable success, Ronaldo revealed that by the summer of 2018, he felt it was time for a new challenge.
“I wanted a different stage, a different motivation. It wasn’t about feeling worn out, but I had decided my time there was over. I told the president, and although he didn’t handle it well, I respect him. I had already given my word to Juventus and couldn’t go back on it.”
Although his Madrid chapter ended, Ronaldo did not rule out a future return in a different role.
Could Ronaldo Return to Real Madrid?
When asked about possibly returning to Madrid in the future, Ronaldo left the door open:
“One day, maybe. I left a legacy there, a nice mark. Maybe when I finish my career, I can do something special at the Bernabéu with 80,000 people.”
He also reminisced about the epic battles between Real Madrid and Barcelona, particularly his famous rivalry with Lionel Messi.
“People today value those duels with Barcelona. The rivalry was incredible – Cristiano vs. Messi, Piqué vs. Ramos… the fans, the tension, the excitement. It was a special time in football.”
