Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has voiced his frustration over the controversial red card shown to Myles Lewis-Skelly during Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 victory against Wolves. Drawing parallels with Bruno Fernandes’ overturned red card for Manchester United earlier this season, Arteta is hopeful that Lewis-Skelly’s suspension will also be rescinded.
Arsenal Triumphs Despite Early Setback
In a high-stakes match at the Emirates, Arsenal secured three crucial points thanks to a determined display, despite playing most of the game with ten men. Lewis-Skelly, the 18-year-old left-back, was dismissed in the first half for a tackle on Matt Doherty that referee Michael Oliver deemed to be “serious foul play.”
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Arsenal’s resolute defense and a solitary goal ensured victory, but Arteta remains focused on the repercussions of Lewis-Skelly’s sending off.
Arteta Points to Bruno Fernandes Case
Speaking to reporters after the match, Arteta referenced Bruno Fernandes’ red card incident earlier this season. Fernandes was sent off during Manchester United’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur in October for a high challenge on James Maddison. However, replays revealed that Fernandes had slipped before making contact, leading to the decision being overturned on appeal.
Arteta expressed his belief that Lewis-Skelly’s case warrants similar reconsideration. “Hopefully we don’t need to appeal, but if we have to, there’s already a strong precedent with Bruno Fernandes this season,” Arteta stated. “The team and the player deserve fairness in the weeks ahead.”
Why Lewis-Skelly’s Ban Could Be Costly
If the red card stands, Lewis-Skelly faces a three-game domestic suspension, ruling him out of Arsenal’s pivotal matches against Manchester City in the league and Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.
Arteta acknowledged the potential impact of losing the young defender but remained optimistic: “We cannot change what happened today. Hopefully, the right decision will be made for the team and the player.”
