Martinez Ruled Out for the Season After ACL Tear
Manchester United have been dealt a massive blow as centre-back Lisandro Martinez has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. The Argentine defender picked up the injury during Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace and had to be stretchered off the field in tears.
How Did the Injury Happen?
Martinez was shielding the ball from Ismaila Sarr when his knee suddenly gave way. The severity of the injury was immediately apparent, and after more than seven minutes of on-field treatment, he was taken off on a stretcher.
United head coach Ruben Amorim described the situation as “serious”, and reports from Argentina’s TyC Sports have since confirmed the worst: Martinez has torn his ACL and will be sidelined for at least nine months to a year.
A Major Setback for Martinez and United
This injury is particularly devastating for Martinez, who already missed 42 games last season due to various injuries. His former manager, Erik ten Hag, previously described his absence as a “personal disaster”, and now, the 27-year-old faces an even longer road to recovery.
Studies indicate that players who have previously suffered ACL injuries are five times more likely to experience another one. This raises concerns about Martinez’s long-term fitness and ability to return to his peak form.
Manchester United’s Defensive Dilemma
Martinez’s injury leaves Ruben Amorim with a serious selection problem in defense. However, United made two defensive signings in the January transfer window:
- Ayden Heaven – The former Arsenal youngster, though inexperienced in the Premier League, could play on the left side of Amorim’s preferred back-three system.
- Patrick Dorgu – Signed from Lecce, Dorgu is a natural left wing-back but might not be a direct replacement for Martinez.
What’s Next for United?
With United’s defensive depth already stretched thin, Amorim may need to adjust his tactics or dip into the transfer market again in the summer. Meanwhile, fans will be hoping for Martinez’s smooth recovery, but his absence could prove costly in United’s bid for a top-four finish.
