  • Barcelona’s Hansi Flick hails Araujo as “one of the best defenders” in the world.
  • Arsenal and Juventus linked with a move for the 25-year-old centre-back.
  • Barcelona reportedly set a £59m price tag, despite interest in extending his contract.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has responded to growing transfer speculation surrounding Ronald Araujo, affirming his desire to keep the Uruguayan defender, who he described as “one of the best defenders” globally.

Araujo’s future at Barcelona has come under scrutiny as talks over a contract extension have stalled. The 25-year-old, whose current deal runs until 2026, is reportedly attracting interest from Arsenal and Juventus during the January transfer window.

The situation is further complicated by Barcelona’s ongoing financial challenges, which could make them consider a substantial offer for Araujo, despite their public reluctance to sell.

Flick’s Praise and Barcelona’s Position

Ronald Araujo

Speaking about Araujo’s potential exit, Flick praised the player’s professionalism and emphasized his importance to the team.

“When I started as a coach, I saw that there were a lot of rumours. Ronald came back from a terrible injury and is now fit to play. He is a good option and very professional,” Flick said.
“I think we have looked after him very well. It is not my job to talk about rumours, but I want him in my team. He is one of the best defenders.”

Despite Flick’s desire to retain Araujo, Barcelona might be forced to listen to offers that meet their reported €70m (£59m) valuation. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan club has already turned down an initial bid from Juventus, signaling their intent to hold firm unless a significant proposal comes in.

Arsenal’s Edge Over Juventus

Should Araujo decide to leave, reports suggest Arsenal hold an advantage over Juventus, with the defender reportedly favoring a move to the Premier League. The Gunners, who remain in the hunt for domestic and European glory this season, could view Araujo as a crucial reinforcement to their backline.

Juventus, on the other hand, continue their efforts to rebuild under financial constraints, but their opening offer has failed to meet Barcelona’s demands.

With Barcelona intent on negotiating an extension and suitors circling, the January window could prove pivotal in determining Araujo’s future.
