Szczesny’s Unexpected Barcelona Resurgence

After retiring last summer, Wojciech Szczesny made a surprising return to football when Barcelona signed him as cover for the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Initially brought in as a backup, the veteran goalkeeper quickly established himself as the club’s No.1 option in January and has remained unbeaten since taking over.

His standout performance in Barcelona’s 1-0 victory over Benfica earned widespread praise, and now, the club is reportedly ready to reward him with a contract extension at the end of the season.

Szczesny’s Future at Barcelona

According to MARCA, Barcelona has been so impressed with Szczesny that they plan to offer him a new deal, keeping him at the club beyond this season.

“I’m not worried about that right now. My focus is on the matches, I want to give my best at Barcelona, and then we will look at my future at the right time,” Szczesny said when asked about his next move.

What Happens to Inaki Pena?

With Ter Stegen expected to reclaim his No.1 spot once fully fit, Barcelona is set to part ways with Inaki Pena. Instead of demoting him to third-choice, the club plans to sell him this summer, as he enters the final 18 months of his contract.

Barcelona’s Other Contract Decisions

Alongside Szczesny, Barcelona has just one more expiring contract to resolve: Inigo Martinez. Reports indicate that the veteran centre-back has already agreed to a contract extension, which only awaits La Liga’s approval.

Additionally, the club has also extended an offer to Frenkie de Jong, whose current deal runs until 2026.

What’s Next for Barcelona’s Goalkeepers?

With Ter Stegen, Szczesny, and Pena’s potential departure, Barcelona’s goalkeeper hierarchy could see a significant shift. The big question remains:

  • Will Szczesny accept the new deal, knowing he may return to a backup role once Ter Stegen is fit?

What do you think about Barcelona’s goalkeeper plans? Should Szczesny stay or look for a No.1 role elsewhere? Drop your thoughts below!
