VAR Decision: De Ligt’s Handball Explained

The Premier League has clarified the decision to penalize Matthijs de Ligt for handball during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

The incident occurred when Alexis Mac Allister’s header struck De Ligt’s arm in the penalty box. Referee Michael Oliver initially waved play on despite protests from Liverpool players and their vocal home crowd.

However, after being advised by VAR to consult the pitch-side monitor, Oliver reviewed the footage and overturned his original decision, awarding Liverpool a penalty. Mohamed Salah successfully converted the spot-kick, with United goalkeeper Andre Onana unable to keep it out despite getting a hand to the ball.

The Premier League’s explanation on their official X (formerly Twitter) account read:

“#LIVMUN – 67’ VAR OVERTURN. VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible handball by De Ligt, deeming that his arm was raised in an unnatural position. Upon review, the referee overturned his original call of no penalty.”

Expert Analysis

Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville expressed his agreement with the decision during the live broadcast, stating:

“As soon as your arm is high like that in the box, you are asking for big trouble. Why is his hand there? I don’t know why his hand is there at all.”

De Ligt’s Performance Amid Controversy

The penalty incident overshadowed what was otherwise a steady performance from Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch defender, who has experienced a mixed start to his Manchester United career, contributed to a more organized and confident display by the Red Devils at Anfield.

United’s midfield, featuring Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo, impressed against Liverpool’s trio of Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, and Ryan Gravenberch. Meanwhile, captain Bruno Fernandes delivered one of his standout performances of the season, leading by example and showcasing his creative flair.

A Promising Turn for Manchester United

Despite the setback of conceding the penalty, Ruben Amorim’s side managed to secure an unexpected point at Anfield. This result lifts Manchester United to 13th in the Premier League table, ahead of West Ham, though they remain far from European qualification spots.

Amorim will be encouraged by the improved organization and fighting spirit displayed by his team, signaling potential brighter days ahead after a challenging start to his tenure.
