Gerrard’s Departure Confirmed
Al Ettifaq officially announced the departure of Steven Gerrard, marking the end of his 18-month tenure in Saudi Arabia. The Englishman took charge in July 2023 and had signed a long-term contract extension in January 2024. However, after finishing sixth last season, the team struggled to maintain consistency, leading to a sharp decline in their league position.
Recent reports suggested that Gerrard was growing frustrated with the situation at the club, and now both parties have agreed to part ways.
Speaking about his departure, Gerrard expressed gratitude for his experience in Saudi Arabia:
“I want to thank the club, players, fans, and everyone involved for their support, especially Mr. Samer, Mr. Hamad, and Mr. Hatim. From day one, I was welcomed warmly, and working in a new country with a different culture has been a valuable learning experience for me and my family.
But football is unpredictable, and things don’t always go as planned. I leave with great respect for the club and the country. I believe success will come in the future, and I wish the team the best for the rest of the season.”
Transfers & Key Players Under Gerrard
During his time at Al Ettifaq, Gerrard oversaw several major signings, most notably bringing in former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. However, Henderson’s Saudi Pro League adventure lasted only six months before he secured a move to Ajax.
Other key players signed during Gerrard’s tenure include:
- Demarai Gray (formerly of Everton)
- Georginio Wijnaldum (ex-Liverpool & PSG)
- Jack Hendry (Scotland international)
- Moussa Dembélé (former Lyon and Celtic striker)
With Gerrard’s departure, Al Ettifaq must now decide on their next managerial appointment to steady the club’s performances.
