Key Points:

  • Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool contract is set to expire this summer.
  • Real Madrid are tracking the star but prefer a free transfer.
  • Liverpool face a dilemma: negotiate a fee in January or risk losing him for nothing.

Real Madrid have reportedly decided against pursuing a January transfer for Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, opting instead to wait for a potential free transfer in the summer.

The 25-year-old defender, regarded as one of the world’s best full-backs, has yet to agree on a new contract with Liverpool. If no deal is reached, Alexander-Arnold will be eligible to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January.

For Liverpool, this presents a crucial decision: either cash in during the winter transfer window or risk losing their homegrown star for free at the end of the season.

Real Madrid’s Approach

According to The Telegraph, Real Madrid are only interested in signing Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer. This mirrors their strategy with other transfer targets, such as Leny Yoro and Kylian Mbappé, where the Spanish giants refused to pay fees, opting instead to wait for their contracts to expire.

While this approach saved the club substantial funds with Mbappé, it backfired with Yoro, who joined Manchester United after Madrid refused to match the English club’s offer.

Alexander-Arnold’s Connections and Aspirations

Alexander-Arnold’s future could also be influenced by his close friendship with Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, a player whose move to Spain was partly motivated by the club’s long-term vision.

The Liverpool defender has previously expressed his ambition to make history by becoming the first full-back to win the Ballon d’Or. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher interpreted this as a sign that Alexander-Arnold may seek a move away from Anfield to elevate his career further.

Real Madrid’s Alternatives

In addition to Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid are monitoring other high-profile players with expiring contracts, including Alphonso Davies, who could leave Bayern Munich in the summer.
