Barcelona Cashes in on Nico Gonzalez’s Move

Barcelona may have had a quiet transfer deadline day, but they still managed to secure an unexpected financial boost thanks to Nico Gonzalez’s move to Manchester City. The Spanish midfielder, who had joined Porto in 2023, was sold to City for £50m, triggering a sell-on clause that initially promised Barcelona a significant windfall.

Porto’s Pre-Purchase of Sell-On Clause Lowers Barcelona’s Earnings

Barcelona originally secured a 40% sell-on clause when they offloaded Nico to Porto in a cut-price deal. However, Porto have now confirmed that they had already bought 20% of that clause from Barcelona for £2.5m (€3m), meaning the Catalan club only retained rights to 20% of the capital gains from the transfer.

A statement from Porto read:
“FC Porto also informs that it has exercised in advance the option to purchase from FC Barcelona 20% of the capital gains on the transfer of the player, worth £2.5m (€3m), retaining FC Barcelona’s right to only 20% of the capital gains on the transfer, also cancelling the buy-back option that FC Barcelona had on the player worth £25m (€30m), exercisable until June 30, 2025.”

As a result, instead of an expected £20m (€24m), Barcelona will pocket approximately £10.8m (€13m) from the deal.

Joan Laporta Teases Late Transfer Moves

Following the deal, Barcelona president Joan Laporta hinted at potential last-minute activity in the transfer window, stating:
“The market ends at midnight, and there may be some surprises. We can close some deals. We are waiting for Deco now.”

However, when pressed for clarification, Laporta admitted he was referring to Nico’s move rather than any new signings for Barcelona.

What’s Next for Barcelona?

While the financial boost is a positive step for Barcelona, their financial struggles remain a concern. The club continues to work towards financial stability while planning future signings.
