Manchester City star Phil Foden has admitted that his frustration with his role in England’s Euro 2024 squad negatively affected his form at the start of the Premier League season. The reigning Player of the Season struggled to make an impact for the Three Lions, leading to a mental and physical dip upon his return to club football.

Foden’s Struggles with England’s System

Foden, who thrived in an attacking midfield role under Pep Guardiola, was asked to play on the left wing for England, with Jude Bellingham occupying the central playmaker role. The Manchester City star found it difficult to influence games, failing to register a goal or assist as England fell to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

“I feel frustrated I didn’t get out what I wanted to get out of it,” Foden told the Manchester Evening News. “The position I was put in on the left was very difficult to influence the game.”

The tournament fatigue carried over into the new club season, with Foden struggling for fitness and form. He didn’t score his first Premier League goal until December, but has since hit top form, netting six goals in six games.

Mental & Physical Fatigue Took Its Toll

Foden admitted that he wasn’t in the right mental space at the start of the season, impacting his performances.

“For me, football is played with the brain and when the brain is mentally fatigued you’re not going to see a player for who he is.”

The 24-year-old took extra time to rest and recover, allowing him to gradually regain his best form. He believes that a strong start to a season is key, and missing out on that momentum delayed his return to peak condition.

“When you start the season good, you have the rest of the season good, but I missed periods at the start, so I think that’s why it’s taken me so long to get going.”

Foden’s Resurgence at Man City

Despite his slow start, Foden has recently been one of City’s standout performers, helping them maintain their title challenge. His recent form has silenced doubts about his mental resilience and fitness.
