Arteta’s Brief Take on Haaland’s Deal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had little to say about Erling Haaland’s staggering new nine-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester City, which could make the Norwegian striker one of the highest-paid athletes in the world. Asked about the news during a press conference, Arteta kept his response succinct:

“Well, that’s the news. If they are willing to commit with a player for that long, it’s because they are really happy, so good news for them,” the Spaniard said.

Haaland’s goals have been a thorn in Arsenal’s side, playing a pivotal role in Manchester City’s dominance and thwarting Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions in recent seasons.

On the Trend of Long-Term Contracts

When asked if contracts of such extraordinary length might become a trend, Arteta appeared unsure, noting that it would likely depend on specific circumstances.

“I don’t know. It looks like [it could be a trend]. Obviously, there’s been a few examples of that. I don’t know if every club is going to take that route, or the reasons for it. I think it will be very particular cases,” Arteta explained before jokingly adding, “Maybe we start with managers as well, doing ten-year contracts. With the physios and the journalists. I don’t know.”

Arsenal’s Mentality Under Pressure

The press conference also touched on Arsenal’s ability to handle pressure as they chase league leaders Liverpool. Arteta stressed the importance of internal motivation and relishing high-stakes challenges.

“If you want to be fighting for the top trophies with the top teams like we have been for the last eleven months, two and a half years now, you have to enjoy those types of moments, those kinds of circumstances, those challenges, the pressure that comes with it.

“I think the pressure comes from within. No one can put pressure on you. If that’s the case, it’s probably because you’re not preparing in the right way. You have to try to be the best you possibly can, and that internal commitment is what drives you.”

Arsenal’s Current Focus

Fresh from a 2-1 victory over Tottenham in the North London Derby, Arsenal now shift their focus to Saturday’s clash against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium. Arteta remains confident in his team’s ability to thrive under pressure as they continue to push for Premier League glory.
