The French youngster remains optimistic despite Tottenham’s ongoing injury crisis and poor form.
Mathys Tel Scores First Spurs Goal but Defeat Adds to Tottenham’s Woes
Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles continued as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round. Despite the loss, there was a silver lining for Spurs fans—Mathys Tel scored his first goal for the club. However, this was little consolation following their Carabao Cup semi-final exit against Liverpool just days earlier.
With mounting pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou and a growing injury crisis, Tottenham’s hopes for a successful season now rest on their Europa League campaign.
Tel’s Optimism Amidst Tough Times

Speaking to club media after the game, the 19-year-old French forward acknowledged the team’s current struggles but remained confident in the squad’s ability to turn things around.
“It’s a good start for me, without the defeats,” Tel said. “It’s something special for me to play my first game at Anfield, a semi-final, and now my debut and a goal. Honestly, that’s good for my confidence. My goal was good, I’m happy, but it’s a difficult day. We have to keep going.”
Despite the defeat, Tel believes in the team’s mentality and quality:
“Honestly, we are sad about the results, but I know the quality of my teammates, the staff… I believe in them. I’m not scared about the future. We play next week against Manchester United, and we are going to do our jobs.”
Spurs’ Injury Crisis and Europa League Hopes
Postecoglou’s squad has been severely affected by injuries, with key players like Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Dominic Solanke all sidelined. The lack of depth has significantly impacted their performances, with Spurs now sitting 14th in the Premier League—a position that could mark their worst top-flight finish in over two decades.
Despite their domestic struggles, Tottenham still has a shot at silverware in the Europa League. Fans will be hoping that once the squad returns to full strength, they can salvage the season.
