Why Barcelona Didn’t Sign Rashford in January
Barcelona sporting director Deco has confirmed that the club considered signing Marcus Rashford during the January transfer window but ultimately decided against it due to financial constraints.
The Manchester United forward, who was made available for transfer in late 2024, was heavily linked with a loan move to Barcelona. However, the Catalan giants struggled with the financial burden of his £300,000-per-week wages, even after United showed willingness to cover part of the salary.
Instead, Rashford completed a shock move to Aston Villa, leaving Barcelona to rely on their existing attacking options.
Deco on Rashford: “It Wasn’t a Priority”
Speaking to SPORT, Deco explained why Barcelona chose to walk away from the Rashford deal:
“The winter transfer market is always difficult. It is true that Rashford was mentioned, but we were not desperately looking for a player either.”
He added that Barcelona already had enough attacking depth and expected some players to regain top form in the second half of the season.
Como’s Ambitious Bid for Rashford
Interestingly, Serie A side Como also made an attempt to sign Rashford. Club president Mirwan Suwarso admitted that while they did their best, big-name players still hesitate to join the club due to their lack of European football.
“We know we are a small club, so some people don’t take us seriously. But we dream, and we believe that one day, Como can be competitive at the highest level.”
What’s Next for Rashford?
- Aston Villa’s newest star will now look to prove himself after a difficult spell at Manchester United.
- Barcelona could revisit their interest in the summer, but only if financial conditions improve.
- Como’s project continues to grow, and their ambition suggests they may make another bold move in the future.
