Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber has shared insights into how the team handled Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card during their 1-0 Premier League victory over Wolves. Despite the decision dividing opinions, Timber emphasized that Arsenal has learned to adapt to playing with ten men and showed resilience to secure a crucial win.

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s Red Card Sparks Debate

Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off just before halftime for a challenge on Wolves’ Matt Doherty, which referee Michael Oliver deemed serious foul play. The tackle, which caught Doherty’s ankle and foot, led to a VAR review but upheld the decision.

The red card, Arsenal’s fourth of the season, sparked outrage among fans and pundits. Alan Shearer and Ian Wright openly criticized the call, with many labeling it “harsh.” Arsenal players reacted emotionally, with Kai Havertz visibly dismayed and Timber receiving a booking for dissent.

Despite the setback, Arsenal responded with grit and determination, securing their first win of the 2024/25 season while down to ten players. Wolves were also reduced to ten men in the second half, which further leveled the playing field before Riccardo Calafiori scored the decisive goal.

Timber Highlights Arsenal’s Mental Toughness

Speaking after the match, Timber expressed the team’s ability to stay composed in challenging situations:
“I didn’t expect the red card, to be honest. But it happens, and you have to react. We can’t keep talking about red cards,” Timber told reporters.

Timber noted that the team barely addressed the red card during halftime, choosing instead to focus on maintaining their strategy:
“It’s still hard, but we also know how to deal with it now. We showed character. That’s what we needed. You have to find a way to get over it and pick it up as a team. We did that.”

Arteta Backs Lewis-Skelly and Prepares Appeal

Manager Mikel Arteta has publicly supported Myles Lewis-Skelly, confirming that Arsenal will appeal the red card decision. Arteta is confident that the Premier League will overturn the ruling, citing the incident as a “misjudgment.”
