  • Harry Maguire shines in Man Utd’s FA Cup victory over Arsenal.
  • Defender fumes over controversial penalty decision against him.
  • Lack of VAR sparks a heated exchange and an on-field brawl.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has expressed his frustration over the absence of VAR in early FA Cup rounds following a controversial penalty decision during Sunday’s dramatic victory against Arsenal.

The incident occurred midway through the second half when referee Andy Madley awarded Arsenal a penalty after Kai Havertz went down in the box. Replays suggested minimal contact between Havertz and Maguire, leaving the United captain furious.

Maguire’s Reaction and Heated Exchange

Without VAR available to review the decision—a system only introduced from the fifth round onwards in the FA Cup—Maguire’s anger boiled over. Cameras captured the defender shouting an expletive-laden tirade at Havertz, reportedly calling him a “cheating scumbag” and a “cheating s**thouse” in the aftermath of the penalty award.

The decision sparked a melee involving players from both teams, with emotions running high.

Justice Served

Despite the controversial call, United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir saved Martin Odegaard’s subsequent penalty, offering Maguire a sense of vindication. Reflecting on the incident post-match, Maguire said:

“At the time, my initial instinct was that VAR would overturn it. Then I remembered VAR wasn’t in use, and that’s when my frustration got the better of me.”

He added:

“[The referee] probably looks back and knows he got it wrong. That’s why we need VAR—these big moments have to be right. It’s a tough job for referees if they don’t have help.”

The Debate Around VAR

The lack of VAR in early FA Cup rounds has reignited the debate about its necessity in modern football, particularly in high-stakes matches. Maguire’s comments reflect a growing consensus among players and fans that consistent use of technology is essential for ensuring fair play.

United’s victory, however, was sealed thanks to a spirited performance, with Maguire playing a pivotal role in defense.
