Chelsea’s Captain Finds New Role Under Maresca
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has made a surprising revelation about Reece James, stating that he has envisioned the Blues’ captain as a midfielder since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
James, who has primarily played as a full-back, has struggled with injuries this season, limiting his time on the pitch. However, in his last two appearances, Maresca deployed him in midfield—a tactical change that contributed to Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Copenhagen in the Europa Conference League.
“At this moment, we are using him as a midfielder and he is doing very well,” Maresca said. “When I signed with Chelsea, probably the day after, I sent him a video about seeing him as a midfielder. I watched some of his games on loan at Wigan where he scored a fantastic goal from 25 or 30 meters as a midfielder.”
James’ Leadership Growth & Impact

While Maresca previously called for more leadership from his captain, he now acknowledges James’ improvement on and off the pitch.
“The best thing about Reece at the moment is his leadership. He is growing a lot since I mentioned we needed him, and this is important.”
James himself remains focused on Chelsea’s European ambitions, stating:
“It’s always good to score and help the team. We need to win next week, we want to advance and win this competition.”
Chelsea’s Struggles & The Importance of James’ Return
Despite Maresca’s praise for James, Chelsea has endured a difficult period, with just two wins in their last ten Premier League games and an FA Cup exit to Brighton. However, the victory over Copenhagen—the club’s first away win since December—offers a glimmer of hope.
Maresca concluded with a reminder of James’ versatility and importance:
“He’s our captain, a fantastic player. We need him fit. Good players can play in many positions, and he is one of them.”
What’s Next for James & Chelsea?
With James returning to full fitness and thriving in a new midfield role, could he be the key to Chelsea’s season revival? Should Maresca continue using him in midfield, or is he best suited at right-back?
