  • Barcelona thrashes Real Madrid 5-2 in Super Cup final.
  • Another painful defeat follows a recent 4-0 El Clasico loss.
  • Ancelotti criticizes his team’s poor execution of tactics.

Carlo Ancelotti expressed frustration with his Real Madrid squad after a humiliating 5-2 defeat against Barcelona in the Super Cup final on Sunday.

Despite coming into the match in better form, Los Blancos were completely outclassed. Barcelona stormed to a commanding lead, and the scoreline could have been even worse if not for Barca goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny’s red card early in the second half, when the Catalan giants were already 5-1 ahead.

Ancelotti described the performance as the exact opposite of what he had envisioned.

Ancelotti Criticizes Defensive Display

“We defended badly, and this hurt us throughout the game. They scored far too easily because we didn’t defend well in high pressure or a low block,” Ancelotti admitted.

The Italian coach also lamented his team’s lack of creativity in attack.
“At half-time, I told them we needed to play football. In the first half, we weren’t playing; we were just hitting long balls, which was never the plan. You can lose games, but not in the way we played during that first half.”

Luka Modric Calls for Unity

Luka Modric

Midfielder Luka Modric was the only Real Madrid player to speak to the media post-match. While refusing to criticize Ancelotti’s tactics, Modric acknowledged his team’s poor display.

“We didn’t play a good game. Barca were better, and that’s it,” Modric stated.

He added:
“It’s not nice when your biggest rivals score nine goals against you in two games. But we have to react. We didn’t expect this, and we feel sorry for the fans and ourselves. Now is the time to stay united and work hard. There’s still a long season ahead, and I’m confident we’ll bring joy to the fans.”

Modric on the Final Loss

“If we have to lose a final… it’s better that it’s this one. This is football; there are victories and defeats. This time, we lost. It’s never pleasant, but if we must choose a defeat, better here than in other competitions.

“Congratulations to Barcelona, they were the better team,” Modric concluded.
