Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, and Lucas Vazquez are on track to return in time for the crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester City.
Madrid secured a thrilling 3-2 first-leg victory despite a defensive crisis that forced Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni to play as makeshift defenders. However, the return of key players could provide a massive boost for Los Blancos as they head into a decisive battle at the Etihad Stadium.
Defensive Reinforcements on the Way
Ancelotti provided an encouraging update on his squad’s injury situation:
“They are improving. They will continue with individual training until Monday, and from Tuesday, they will rejoin the group. They will be available for the match against Manchester City.”
Vazquez, who has been covering for Dani Carvajal at right-back, has only been out for a few weeks with a minor hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Alaba and Rudiger’s recoveries are particularly crucial, as Madrid have been without three of their main centre-backs for several weeks.
Madrid’s Defensive Struggles & Possible Lineup Changes
With Eder Militao still recovering from an ACL injury, Madrid’s defense has been severely tested. Raul Asencio has stepped in admirably but is likely to make way once the senior defenders return.
If Alaba and Rudiger prove their fitness, Madrid could return to a more familiar defensive setup, allowing Valverde and Tchouameni to return to their natural midfield roles.
Can Madrid Hold Off City’s Attack?
With a one-goal advantage, Madrid must be solid at the back to contain Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, and Phil Foden. The return of Rudiger and Alaba could be the difference between reaching the semi-finals and an early exit.
