Barcelona Eyes Jonathan Tah as Defensive Reinforcement

Barcelona are closing in on the signing of Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah, with reports suggesting the German international will join the club on a free transfer this summer. However, to accommodate his arrival, the Catalan giants are open to selling Andreas Christensen, who has attracted significant interest from the Premier League.

Jonathan Tah to Join Barcelona for Free

Jonathan Tah confirmed earlier this season that he would not be renewing his contract with Bayer Leverkusen, making him one of the most sought-after free agents in European football. Initially, Bayern Munich were favorites to land the 29-year-old defender, but after talks collapsed, Barcelona stepped in and are now in pole position to secure his signature.

Reports towards the end of 2024 indicated that Tah’s move to Barcelona was nearly complete. At the time, Ronald Araujo was seen as the player most likely to depart, but the Uruguayan has since signed a new contract until 2031, reaffirming his long-term commitment to the club.

With Araujo staying, Barcelona have shifted their focus to offloading Andreas Christensen to free up space in their defensive lineup.

Andreas Christensen Linked With Premier League Return

Christensen’s contract runs until 2026, but injuries have hampered his impact this season. After missing significant game time, the Danish centre-back has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona.

The 27-year-old defender, who previously starred in the Premier League with Chelsea, has attracted interest from several English clubs, including:

  • Manchester United
  • Newcastle United
  • Tottenham Hotspur

With Barcelona facing ongoing financial struggles, selling Christensen would reduce the wage bill and help the club accommodate Tah’s salary without breaching financial fair play regulations.

Bayern Munich Rule Out Tah Move

Barcelona’s pursuit of Tah received a major boost after Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, confirmed that they are no longer interested in signing him:

“Tah’s name is not in our thoughts now. Our defense is at a high level, and it is not something that is on Bayern’s table for next season.”

This statement has cleared the way for Barcelona to finalize the deal, although official confirmation is yet to come.

What’s Next for Barcelona’s Defensive Reshuffle?

With Tah’s move all but confirmed, the main question remains: Where will Andreas Christensen go? Should Barcelona cash in on the Danish defender now, or keep him as part of their squad?

💬 What do you think? Should Barcelona sell Christensen or keep him for squad depth? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
