Liverpool Held to 2-2 Draw as Nunez Misses Golden Opportunity
Liverpool were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on Wednesday evening, with Darwin Nunez missing a crucial chance to secure all three points.
Manager Arne Slot later revealed the striker was left “down and disappointed” in the dressing room after his costly miss.
Nunez’s Open-Goal Miss Leaves Liverpool Frustrated
With 20 minutes remaining, Dominik Szoboszlai squared a perfect pass to Nunez, leaving him with an open goal. However, with Axel Disasi closing in, the Uruguayan striker blasted his effort high over the bar, squandering a golden chance to secure victory.
Slot reflected on the moment, saying:
“I saw an unbelievable pass from Conor Bradley, a powerful run from Dominik Szoboszlai, who made the perfect choice to square it. It became an open-goal chance, but Darwin… It was not the best. He is right-footed, but it’s still a big chance.”
The miss sparked frustration among fans, adding to the pressure already weighing on Nunez, whose finishing has been inconsistent this season.
Arne Slot: “Nunez Feels Quite Down”

Slot admitted that the dressing room atmosphere was affected by the missed opportunity:
“We were all disappointed, but it’s normal that a player like this feels it more. There is one player in the dressing room who feels quite down. You know who it is.”
Nunez has faced ongoing scrutiny for his erratic finishing, and this miss only added fuel to the debate over his role in Liverpool’s attack.
Liverpool Maintain Title Lead but Struggle for Form
Despite dropping points, Liverpool remain eight points clear of Arsenal in the Premier League title race. However, they have won just one of their last four matches across all competitions.
Slot dismissed concerns over a dip in form, saying:
“I don’t feel like we’re in a dip at all. Villa away is always a difficult fixture. City away will be a difficult one too.”
However, he acknowledged that Liverpool have been wasting too many opportunities in recent matches:
“We must not make a habit out of not getting what we deserve. It has happened a bit too much now.”
