Introduction
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was left furious after his teenage defender Myles Lewis-Skelly received a controversial red card during the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. The 18-year-old made an unwanted piece of Premier League history by becoming the youngest-ever Arsenal player to be sent off, and Arteta could hardly contain his anger at the decision.
The Incident: Myles Lewis-Skelly’s Red Card
The incident occurred just before halftime when Lewis-Skelly, attempting to stop a quick counter-attack from Wolves, tripped up Matt Doherty. The referee, Michael Oliver, awarded a straight red card instead of a yellow, much to the surprise of the player and his teammates. Despite protests, VAR did not overturn the decision, agreeing that Lewis-Skelly’s challenge was “serious foul play.”
The Gunners, however, managed to hold on with a man down. Wolves saw Joao Gomes receive a second yellow card in the 70th minute, leveling the numbers. Soon after, Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal of the match, securing three points for the visitors.
Arteta’s Reaction to the Red Card
Arteta, visibly upset, expressed his frustration with the decision: “It is that clear that I leave it to you guys,” he said to Sky Sports after the match, struggling to control his emotions. “I am absolutely fuming but I leave it with you. Because it is that obvious. I don’t think my words are going to help.”
He also revealed that he received no explanation from the officials regarding the decision, adding to his confusion and frustration.
Record-Breaking Red Card
At just 18 years and 121 days old, Lewis-Skelly became the youngest player in Premier League history to be sent off for Arsenal. Only two players in the competition’s history have ever been shown a red card at a younger age. The two who precede him are future Ballon d’Or winner Michael Owen, who was also 18 when he was sent off against Manchester United in 1998, and Wayne Rooney, who was dismissed at just 17 years old during his time at Everton.
What’s Next for Myles Lewis-Skelly?
Despite the setback, Lewis-Skelly’s future remains bright, and he will be hoping to bounce back from the unfortunate incident. Arteta and Arsenal will certainly have his back as he continues to develop.
