Flick Highlights Liverpool as Top Contender
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has named Liverpool as his favourite to win the Champions League this season, despite his own team’s impressive form in Europe. Flick’s remarks come as Barcelona gear up for a crucial clash against Benfica in Lisbon on Tuesday night.
Barcelona’s recent form in the Champions League has been stellar, with a five-match winning streak following an initial defeat to Monaco. However, their domestic campaign in La Liga has been inconsistent, which Flick attributes to the challenge of playing teams like Getafe.
Flick on Champions League and Domestic Form
Flick expressed his admiration for Liverpool’s performance, highlighting their 100% record in the league phase as a standout. “Liverpool is one of my favourites,” Flick told reporters. “Winning the Champions League is one of the most difficult things in the world. We’re doing well, but there are some very good teams that are also doing well.”
Barcelona currently sits second in the Champions League table behind Liverpool, having secured key victories against teams like Bayern Munich, Red Star Belgrade, and Borussia Dortmund. However, their La Liga campaign has been a different story, with just one win in their last eight games, trailing seven points behind leaders Real Madrid.
Recent Success and Future Challenges
Despite the challenges in La Liga, Barcelona clinched the Supercopa de Espana earlier this month with a dominant performance against Real Madrid, securing a 4-0 victory in the final. Flick remains optimistic about their chances in both the Champions League and domestic competitions, acknowledging the tough road ahead.
