Barcelona’s Defensive Star Faces Consequences Once Again
Kounde Benched for Rayo Vallecano Clash
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has sent a clear message to Jules Kounde after the defender arrived late for the third time this season. The Frenchman was left out of the starting lineup for Monday’s 1-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano, a direct result of his repeated timekeeping issues.
Previously, Kounde was dropped for similar reasons against Alaves in October and Espanyol in November. On each occasion, he was later introduced as a substitute, including in the Rayo Vallecano match, where he helped Barcelona secure a crucial win to move to the top of La Liga.
Flick: “Lateness Will Not Be Tolerated”
Speaking after the match, Hansi Flick made his stance on discipline clear:
“Before a match, I want everyone to know their roles on the pitch. We have two or three meetings before games – it’s not difficult to arrive early. Kounde arrived late, and that goes against our club rules. It’s about respect for the team, the club, and our fans.”
Despite these disciplinary breaches, Kounde remains a key part of Flick’s system, starting every match this season except the three where he was benched for tardiness.
Chelsea Still Interested in Kounde?
With Barcelona set to reward Kounde with a new contract, speculation continues around his future. Premier League giants Chelsea have been long-term admirers of the French defender and are reportedly considering a €100m (£83m) bid in the upcoming transfer window.
However, given his importance to Flick’s plans, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will entertain offers or stand firm with their disciplinary stance.
