Liverpool Captain Furious Over Officiating in 2-2 Draw
Liverpool were forced to settle for a dramatic 2-2 draw against Everton in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, but the match was marred by controversy.
Virgil van Dijk didn’t hold back in his post-match interview, criticizing referee Michael Oliver for his handling of the game. The Dutch defender argued that the official lost control of the heated contest, particularly in key moments that led to both of Everton’s goals.
Everton’s Goals Spark Controversy
Everton took an early lead through Beto, capitalizing on a questionable free-kick decision. However, Liverpool quickly responded with a goal from Alexis Mac Allister.
The Reds then took control when Mohamed Salah fired them ahead, only for James Tarkowski to smash home a 98th-minute equalizer—a goal that went through lengthy VAR checks before being allowed to stand.
Speaking after the game, Van Dijk expressed his frustration:
“I didn’t think the referee had the game under control. This was their cup final. The referee had a big impact, with certain challenges being given as fouls and others not.”
Chaos Ensues After the Final Whistle
The drama didn’t stop with the final whistle. A heated confrontation erupted after Abdoulaye Doucoure provoked Liverpool’s away fans with an aggressive celebration.
Curtis Jones reacted, leading to a scuffle that saw both players sent off. Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff also received red cards for protesting against Michael Oliver’s officiating.
Van Dijk commented on the brawl:
“Doucoure wanted to provoke our fans. Curtis didn’t think it was right, and then you know what happens in these situations.”
David Moyes’ Reaction: “It Was Mayhem”
Everton boss David Moyes had a lighter take on the chaotic game:
“It was mayhem all game, a bit of an old-fashioned throwback. The bit after the game isn’t what we should be talking about.”
However, the Scotsman admitted disappointment over losing Doucoure to suspension as Everton battles squad depth issues.
Did Liverpool Deserve More?
Liverpool fans will feel aggrieved after dropping two points in a match where refereeing decisions played a major role.
