Manchester City 2-3 Real Madrid: Guardiola Admits Tactical Shortcomings
Late Drama at the Etihad as City Let Another Lead Slip
Manchester City suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at home to Real Madrid in the Champions League, conceding two goals in the final five minutes. Despite Erling Haaland’s brace, City collapsed under pressure, allowing Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham to turn the game on its head.
This latest defeat marks the fifth time this season that City have lost a game after leading – equaling the total number of such occurrences across the previous four seasons combined.
Guardiola: “I Can’t Find a Solution”
Speaking to Movistar after the game, Pep Guardiola admitted his frustration over his team’s inability to defend a lead:
“It’s happened many times, if something happens many times it’s because I can’t find a solution.”
Guardiola acknowledged Real Madrid’s strong attacking display but lamented his side’s inability to hold onto their advantage.
“Madrid played better with the ball, and we were a bit anxious. These are things that have happened to us many times during the year. We have tough games left, and we will try to adjust and get through.”
Real Madrid’s Dominance at the Etihad
While the scoreline was tight, Carlo Ancelotti believed his team deserved the win. Real Madrid recorded 20 shots – the most any visiting team has managed against Guardiola’s City at the Etihad in eight-and-a-half years.
Bellingham’s stoppage-time winner sealed yet another famous European comeback for Madrid, reinforcing their reputation as kings of the Champions League.
Can City Turn It Around in Madrid?
Manchester City now faces an uphill battle in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, February 19. They must win by at least two clear goals to progress outright or force a penalty shootout with a one-goal margin victory.
With their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread, City must regroup and find a way to overcome their defensive frailties.
What Do You Think?
- Can City stage a comeback at the Bernabeu?
- Should Guardiola make tactical changes for the second leg?
