Leverkusen Dismisses Xabi Alonso Exit Rumors
Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has firmly denied reports suggesting that Xabi Alonso could leave the club for Real Madrid this summer. Despite persistent speculation linking Alonso with a return to the Santiago Bernabéu, Leverkusen remains confident that their highly sought-after manager will honor his contract.
Alonso, who took over at Leverkusen in 2022, has rapidly built a reputation as one of Europe’s most promising coaches. After leading the team to their first-ever Bundesliga title with an unbeaten season, he further cemented his legacy by winning the DFB Pokal. Though his side narrowly missed out on a historic treble following their Europa League final defeat to Atalanta, Alonso’s tactical intelligence and leadership have made him a prime target for Europe’s elite clubs.
Real Madrid’s Managerial Uncertainty Fuels Speculation
The uncertainty surrounding Carlo Ancelotti’s future has fueled speculation about Alonso’s potential move to Madrid. Although Ancelotti signed a contract extension in 2023 amid interest from the Brazilian national team, his position remains a topic of debate, especially with Real Madrid facing a fierce title race in La Liga.
However, despite rumors that Ancelotti could leave Madrid sooner than expected, Rolfes has made it clear that Alonso is not part of any potential managerial change at the Bernabéu.
Alonso’s Commitment to Leverkusen
Speaking to German media, Rolfes dismissed any notion of Alonso’s departure, stating:
“No, he’s staying, that’s it. He told me that there was nothing. He has a contract with us.”
Alonso’s contract with Leverkusen runs until 2026, which means that unless Real Madrid decides to wait, they may need to look elsewhere for Ancelotti’s successor. However, if the Italian coach remains in charge until the end of his current deal, speculation around Alonso’s future could resurface in the coming years.
What’s Next for Alonso?
Leverkusen’s strong stance suggests that Alonso is committed to continuing his project in Germany, at least for the immediate future. However, with his growing reputation and Madrid’s historical tendency to favor former players in managerial roles, it seems only a matter of time before the Spanish giants come knocking again.
Do you think Alonso should stay at Leverkusen and continue building his legacy, or is a return to Real Madrid inevitable?
