Fixture Congestion Forces Rotation

Son Heung-min, Tottenham Hotspur’s captain, was left on the bench alongside James Maddison and Yves Bissouma for their 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United. Despite coming on as a second-half substitute, the South Korean forward was unable to inspire a comeback.

Postecoglou’s Explanation

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou attributed Son’s omission to the team’s hectic fixture schedule, which has demanded a high level of physical and mental endurance from key players. Son has been balancing Premier League commitments with Carabao Cup, Europa League matches, and international duties with South Korea.

Speaking after the match, Postecoglou explained:
“It was just a combination of needing running power and energy early on. The idea was to bring in experienced players like Sonny, Biss, and Maddison later in the game, and I thought it worked well. We finished really strong. They’ve all played a lot of football, and having them fresh helps mentally as much as physically. When they came on, they made a real difference for us.”

Match Analysis

Despite Dominic Solanke giving Spurs an early lead, Anthony Gordon equalized controversially for Newcastle before Alexander Isak sealed the win. Replays showed a clear handball by Joelinton in the build-up to Newcastle’s opener, sparking outrage from Spurs fans and players.

Tottenham’s Premier League struggles have become increasingly concerning. The team has now lost half of its 20 matches this season, sitting 12th in the table. Remarkably, their attacking and defensive records are almost identical to this stage last season, but they are 15 points worse off.

Postecoglou’s Frustration with Officiating

The Greek-Australian manager was visibly frustrated by the controversial officiating decisions but refrained from outright criticism of referee Andy Madley. Instead, he alluded to a lack of fairness in the game:
“On any other day, on a fair and even playing field, we would have won that game. Simple as that.”

When pressed further, Postecoglou added:
“I know what my opinion is, but I’m not going to get into a discussion about whether it was handball or accidental. What I’m saying is, with logical decisions and fairness, we would have come out on top. That’s it. Make of that what you will.”

What’s Next for Spurs?

The defeat has put Spurs in a precarious position, with their performances falling short of expectations. As fixture congestion continues, Postecoglou faces the challenge of balancing squad rotation with the need for points in the league and progress in other competitions.
