Van Dijk Ties Phil Neal’s Record
The Dutch defender made his 50th Champions League appearance for Liverpool in the win against Lille, marking his 35th victory in the competition. This achievement sees Van Dijk draw level with Liverpool legend Phil Neal for the most wins in a player’s first 50 Champions League games.
Neal, a four-time European Cup winner, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Liverpool history. With 23 major trophies to his name during his tenure from 1974 to 1985, Neal also boasts an impressive 650 appearances for the Reds, ranking seventh on the all-time list.
Slot Praises Van Dijk’s Consistency
Liverpool manager Arne Slot was full of praise for Van Dijk following the milestone. Slot noted that the contract uncertainty surrounding Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold has not impacted their form this season.
“The situation hasn’t affected the group,” Slot remarked. “Virgil, Mo, and Trent have consistently hit the standard or exceeded it. Their performances have been top-notch.”
Slot did, however, acknowledge Trent Alexander-Arnold’s dip in form during Liverpool’s match against Manchester United, but he emphasized the team’s overall consistency.
Liverpool’s Champions League Momentum
Liverpool’s victory against Lille extends their 100% record in the Champions League this season. Van Dijk’s commanding performance in defense, paired with the continued brilliance of Salah and Alexander-Arnold, signals a promising campaign for the Reds as they chase European glory once again.
