Son Heung-min’s Future Secured at Tottenham
Tottenham Triggers Extension Clause in Son Heung-min’s Contract
Tottenham Hotspur has exercised the option to extend Son Heung-min’s contract by one more year, keeping the South Korean forward at the club until June 2026. This decision comes as a significant move for the club, ensuring that their captain will remain in North London for at least two more seasons.
Son Heung-min’s Legacy at Tottenham
Since joining Tottenham in 2015, Son has become one of the club’s all-time greats. With only four players scoring more goals than him in the club’s 143-year history, Son has firmly cemented his place as a Spurs legend. His early struggles were forgotten as he formed a potent partnership with Harry Kane, one of the few players with more goals than Son for Spurs.
The Club Captaincy and Recent Struggles
Following Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich in 2023, Son was appointed the club captain. In Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge, Son finished as Tottenham’s top scorer. However, this season, the 32-year-old has faced challenges in his form, even being benched in the recent Premier League match against Newcastle United, where he only played the final 30 minutes in a 2-1 home defeat.
Barcelona’s Interest and Tottenham’s Decision
As Son’s contract was set to expire in the summer of 2024, Barcelona had been linked with a move for the South Korean star. Despite his dip in form, Tottenham confirmed the one-year contract extension just days after the loss to Newcastle, ensuring Son stays until 2026.
A club statement read: “We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to extend Heung-Min Son’s contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026. Having joined the club in August 2015, Sonny, 32, has become a global star during his time with us and a modern-day great for Tottenham Hotspur.”
Son’s Role and Future at Tottenham
While Son has had to adjust to playing on the left wing this season, his place in the starting lineup has been questioned with the arrival of Dominic Solanke. His goal tally has been modest with only five goals from 17 Premier League games so far. With Tottenham eyeing a potential January move for Paris Saint-Germain’s centre-forward, it seems unlikely Son will return to his central role anytime soon.
