A Promising Start at Brentford
Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg, who joined Brentford from Liverpool last summer, has been making waves with his performances in the Premier League. The 23-year-old centre-back, signed for £25m, has already clocked 25 appearances this season and is proving to be a key player for the Bees.
The Journey from Liverpool to Brentford
Van den Berg arrived at Anfield as a highly-rated 17-year-old from PEC Zwolle in 2019. However, breaking into Liverpool’s star-studded defense proved challenging. Loan spells at Preston North End and Schalke offered mixed results, with injuries hampering his progress. A successful stint at Mainz last season reignited his career, but despite impressing Liverpool’s coaching staff, he opted for a move that guaranteed regular first-team football.
Van den Berg: “I Dream of Returning to Liverpool”

In a recent interview with Voetbal Primeur, Van den Berg admitted that his heart still lies with Liverpool:
“I would be lying if I said that I did not dream of returning to Liverpool one day. That is still on my mind. But for now, it was better for my career to take a different path and play a lot.”
He acknowledged Liverpool’s interest in keeping him last summer but prioritized consistent playing time:
“After pre-season, Liverpool indicated that they wanted me to stay, but I didn’t see it that way. It was my decision to leave, and I am happy playing in the Premier League every week.”
Regrets Over Liverpool’s Defensive Injuries?
Liverpool have struggled with injuries at centre-back this season, with Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez spending time on the sidelines. Van den Berg admitted to wondering what might have been:
“I would be lying if I said that I didn’t think about that myself. That’s football, you never know. I did well in pre-season and could see myself playing for Liverpool, but not with the credit I have now at Brentford.”
Despite this, he remains focused on his career path and is open to a future return to Anfield:
“At Liverpool, I would have been more of a backup. Here, I am a starter. And who knows? If I do well for two or three years, maybe I will return to Liverpool as a first-choice player.”
Could Van den Berg Return to Liverpool?
