Ronald Araujo’s Surprising New Release Clause at Barcelona

Ronald Araujo’s latest contract extension with Barcelona has revealed a shocking detail—a release clause that could see him leave the Camp Nou for a relatively modest fee.

Affordable Release Clause for Top Clubs

The Uruguayan defender recently signed a long-term deal keeping him at Barcelona until 2031. However, reports from Relevo indicate that the contract includes a surprisingly affordable release clause of €65m (£54.9m), making him an attractive option for Europe’s biggest clubs in the summer transfer window.

For context, Araujo’s previous release clause stood at an eye-watering €1bn, but this new figure is much more feasible for clubs like Arsenal and Juventus, both of whom have shown strong interest in the 25-year-old.

From January 2026, this release clause will rise to €80m (£67.6m) if Araujo is still with Barcelona. While the initial figure is considered low by today’s transfer market standards, it still requires the full amount to be paid upfront to activate the clause, as per Spanish contract regulations.

Why Did Barcelona Lower the Clause?

Barcelona has opted not to disclose the release clauses in the contracts of players like Araujo and Gerard Martin, raising questions about their transfer strategies.

This affordable clause is likely a calculated risk by Barcelona, who may be banking on Araujo’s loyalty and the club’s rebuilding efforts under Xavi. Still, it leaves the door open for top European sides to snap up the defender at a price that won’t deter most elite teams.

Will Araujo Leave?

The speculation surrounding Araujo’s future isn’t new. With top clubs like Arsenal and Juventus circling, the summer window could see intense competition for his signature. However, Barcelona’s financial struggles and the player’s potential desire to compete at the highest level might influence his decision.
