Chelsea Holds Everton to a Stalemate at Goodison Park
- Chelsea played out a 0-0 draw against Everton on Sunday.
- The Blues missed the opportunity to overtake Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
- Despite the result, Enzo Maresca praised his team’s performance.
Maresca Praises Chelsea’s Resilience
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed his satisfaction after his team managed a hard-fought draw against Everton at a windy Goodison Park. While the goalless stalemate meant Chelsea dropped two points, Maresca highlighted the challenging conditions and the opposition’s defensive strength as reasons to appreciate the result.
“I’m absolutely happy,” Maresca said post-match. “Today’s game was tricky in many ways: the stadium, the opposition, the weather. I was more worried about this game than the Brentford match we won 2-1 last week.”
Everton’s Defensive Strength Shines
Although Everton sits near the relegation zone, Sean Dyche’s team has been formidable defensively. Their clean sheet against Chelsea was their seventh of the Premier League season, the most of any team.
“They are defensively top,” Maresca continued. “One of the best teams in Europe for clean sheets. It’s not easy to create chances against them. We had to adapt to their style — long balls, second balls, set pieces. Football is not just about how you attack but also how you handle these challenges.”
Missed Opportunities for Chelsea

Chelsea had their chances in the first half, with Nicolas Jackson failing to capitalize on two clear opportunities. These missed chances left the Blues four points behind Liverpool, who convincingly defeated Tottenham Hotspur on the same day.
Despite the missed opportunity to climb the table, Maresca reiterated his satisfaction. “You prepare every game to win, but sometimes the other team is just as determined. I’m more pleased with how we adapted and handled the game today than I was after last week’s win.”
