Real Madrid’s victory over Girona on Sunday saw the club set an unusual club record.

Goals from Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior inspired a comfortable 2-0 win which sent Madrid back to second in the La Liga standings, tied on points with leaders Barcelona but behind on head-to-head.

As noted by MARCA, the game was played with just one foul from Madrid. Never before have Los Blancos committed so few fouls.

Lucas Vazquez was penalised in the 36th minute but that was the only time Madrid were called up by the official, who only blew the whistle for seven fouls for Girona. The team’s combined eight fouls over the course of the game was also the lowest in La Liga this season.

“We are happy, because after the Champions League there can always be… ‘trap’ games,” manager Carlo Ancelotti reflected after the match. “But the team started well, had good control, defended well, and although there was no exaggerated pace, everything was well controlled. And we played well.

“We are doing well, doing well. But today the best news is [David] Alaba’s recovery. He played very well for 60 minutes, very comfortable. And we are starting to recover pieces at the back.

“I was able to give [Federico] Valverde and [Antonio] Rudiger a rest. We are reaching the most important part of the season in good shape.”
