Luka Modric Out with Viral Infection
Real Madrid captain Luka Modric has been ruled out of Thursday evening’s Supercopa de Espana semi-final against Mallorca, just hours before the match.
The 39-year-old midfielder has been diagnosed with a viral infection, leaving a significant void in Madrid’s midfield as they aim to retain the trophy they won last year. There is no clear timeline for Modric’s recovery, raising doubts over his availability for the final on Sunday should Madrid advance.
Supercopa Semi-Final Matchup
Real Madrid have travelled to Saudi Arabia, where the Supercopa de Espana is being held for the fourth consecutive year. They are favourites to progress against Mallorca, who earned their place after reaching last season’s Copa del Rey final. However, Modric’s absence is a significant setback for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Barcelona Await in the Final
Barcelona, the all-time leaders in Supercopa victories with 14 titles, await in the final if Madrid can secure their place. Last year, Real Madrid claimed a 4-1 victory in the final, while Barcelona won 3-1 in the previous year’s edition.
Ancelotti’s Optimism
Despite Modric’s absence, Carlo Ancelotti has stressed the importance of the Supercopa, citing how previous January triumphs have propelled Madrid to La Liga and Champions League glory.
“It is the first competition of the year and we won it in 2022 and 2024. That gave us motivation and that is what we hope for this Supercopa: that it brings us motivation and commitment for the rest of the season,” Ancelotti said.
