A Record-Breaking January Transfer Window

The 2025 January transfer window saw Premier League clubs collectively spend almost four times more than in 2024. While most deals were loan moves, a few clubs went big to reinforce their squads. Manchester City alone contributed significantly to the league’s overall spending.

As the dust settles, let’s analyze how each club fared in this transfer window, ranking them based on their expenditure.

Clubs That Spent Nothing

15. Arsenal, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, Newcastle & West Ham – £0m

Arne Slot, Mikel Arteta

Several Premier League clubs opted against any new signings this winter. Arsenal failed to secure a striker, while Newcastle, Liverpool, and Fulham refrained from any purchases.

West Ham and Everton managed loan deals for Evan Ferguson and Charly Alcaraz respectively, but the loan fees remain undisclosed.

Modest Spenders

14. Brentford – £420,000

FBL-ENG-PR-BRENTFORD-TOTTENHAM

Brentford’s sole signing was 20-year-old Fiorentina full-back Michael Kayode on an initial loan worth £420,000, with a potential £13.5m purchase clause in the summer.

13. Nottingham Forest – £2m

Nottingham Forest added free agent Wayne Hennessey and 20-year-old Tyler Bindon, who was immediately loaned back to Reading.

12. Leicester – £2.5m

Antonio Candela

Leicester’s financial constraints limited their activity. Their only acquisition was Parma right-back Wayo Coulibaly.

11. Southampton – £4.2m

Albert Gronbaek

Southampton focused on youth, with Albert Gronbaek arriving on loan as their standout addition.

Mid-Level Spending

10. Crystal Palace – £12m

Romain Esse

Crystal Palace signed 19-year-old Romain Esse from Millwall, continuing their trend of nurturing young Championship talents.

9. Chelsea – £12.5m

Mathis Amougou

Chelsea were more focused on outgoings, loaning out several key players. Their only signing was Mathis Amougou from Saint-Etienne for £12.5m.

8. Bournemouth – £18m

Bournemouth made a move for 18-year-old Lorient forward Eli Junior Kroupi, paying £10m for his services.

7. Ipswich – £22m

Ipswich made early moves, signing Jaden Philogene for £20m and adding Ben Godfrey and Julio Enciso on loan.

6. Tottenham – £23m

Tottenham secured a loan deal for Mathys Tel and signed Kevin Danso on an obligation-to-buy loan deal.

5. Manchester United – £27m

Manchester United’s marquee signing was Patrick Dorgu, but their overall business left fans wanting more.

4. Aston Villa – £32m

Aston Villa made strategic additions, including Donyell Malen and Marcus Rashford on loan, while Marco Asensio bolstered their attacking options.

Big Spenders

3. Brighton – £41m

Brighton invested in youth, securing Stefanos Tzimas and Eiran Cashin, while also selling Kaoru Mitoma to Al Nassr.

2. Wolves – £42m

Wolves reinforced their defense by signing Emmanuel Agbadou and Marshall Munetsi from Reims, along with Nasser Djiga.

1. Manchester City – £180m

Manchester City were the biggest spenders, addressing their squad issues with Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Vitor Reis, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Their aggressive approach indicates more changes in the summer.
