Man City’s Financial Fair Play Battle Nears Conclusion
After two years of speculation and legal proceedings, Manchester City are set to learn the outcome of their 115 Premier League charges within the next month. Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that a verdict is expected soon, bringing an end to one of the biggest financial investigations in football history.
Man City’s Financial Breaches – What We Know
Back in February 2023, the Premier League charged Manchester City with over 100 breaches of financial regulations, accusing the club of inflating sponsorship agreements to bypass financial fair play (FFP) rules. The club has denied any wrongdoing, and an independent tribunal reviewed the case at the end of 2024.
Guardiola, addressing the media on February 7, 2025, stated:
“In one month, I think there will be a verdict and a sentence. After that, we will see my opinion of what happened so far.”
Could Man City Face Relegation? Guardiola Speaks Out

Amid ongoing speculation about potential punishments—ranging from points deductions to relegation—Guardiola has stood by his club. The Catalan coach signed a two-year contract extension in November, notably without a break clause in case of relegation.
Guardiola also took a swipe at rival clubs, suggesting that they are waiting for Manchester City’s downfall:
“My words will not convince people. I know with this club, it is always ‘just about the money’. But in the past five years, we are the last among the top six for net spend.”
How Does Man City’s Spending Compare to Other Clubs?
Despite heavy investment in the winter transfer window—spending £180m on four players—Guardiola insists that City’s net spend is lower than their rivals. According to Transfermarkt, since the summer of 2020, the club’s net spend stands at £322m, which is lower than:
- Chelsea (£770m)
- Manchester United (£568m)
- Tottenham (£476m)
- Arsenal (£464m)
- Newcastle United (£351m)
Only Liverpool, with £250m, have recorded a lower net spend than City during this period.
What’s Next for Manchester City?
With a verdict expected in March, football fans worldwide are eagerly waiting to see if Manchester City will be cleared of all charges or face serious consequences. Will Guardiola’s team suffer a points deduction, a transfer ban, or even relegation?
