A Rising Star Who Left Madrid for Opportunities
Miguel Gutierrez, a product of Real Madrid’s renowned youth academy La Fabrica, left the club in 2022 in search of regular first-team football. Despite making ten appearances for the senior squad, the young left-back found his path to a permanent role blocked by stiff competition. Girona seized the opportunity, signing Gutierrez at the start of the 2022/23 season—a move that has since paid off handsomely for both player and club.
Thriving at Girona: A Key Player in a Historic Season
Under the guidance of head coach Michel, Gutierrez has flourished, becoming one of the standout full-backs in La Liga. His attacking prowess has been a major asset, contributing two goals and nine assists last season. This year, he has already racked up eight goal involvements, playing a crucial role in Girona’s unexpected qualification for the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League.
Girona’s remarkable season has attracted attention from top European clubs, and Real Madrid now faces a decision—should they activate their buy-back clause and bring their former talent back to the Santiago Bernabeu?
Madrid’s Left-Back Situation and the €9M Buy-Back Clause
Real Madrid holds a bargain buy-back option for Gutierrez, allowing them to re-sign him for just €9 million this summer or €10 million in 2026. While this clause makes a return financially viable, the question remains whether Madrid actually needs another left-back.
Los Blancos have been linked with several options, including Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. However, with Ferland Mendy recently extending his contract until 2028 and Fran Garcia proving to be a reliable backup, Madrid may not prioritize reinforcing this position in the upcoming transfer window.
Agent Fuels Speculation Over a Bernabeu Return
Gutierrez’s agent, Daniel Mendez, recently stirred speculation by expressing his client’s desire to return to Madrid. Speaking on the Zona Mixta Podcast, Mendez stated:
“We would love for Real Madrid to bring back Miguel. Everyone knows his desire, but it doesn’t depend on him. If he returns, we’ll all be happy.”
While Gutierrez remains focused on helping Girona build on their success, the possibility of a Real Madrid comeback cannot be ruled out. Should Los Blancos take advantage of their buy-back option, or is Gutierrez better off continuing his development elsewhere?
