Marcus Rashford’s time at Manchester United appears to be nearing an end after his attitude in training was publicly criticized by head coach Ruben Amorim. The situation has prompted United legend Rio Ferdinand to warn that there is “no way back” for the England international.

Rashford’s Absence and Amorim’s Criticism
Rashford, 27, has been absent from Manchester United’s matchday squads since December 12. While his absence against Liverpool was attributed to illness, Amorim has made it clear that Rashford’s performances in training have not met the required standards.
“It’s always the same reason… the training,” Amorim said when questioned about Rashford’s exclusion. “If things don’t change, I will not change. It’s the same situation for every player—if you do the maximum and right things, we can use every player.”
Amorim went further, joking that 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital would be more likely to make the bench than Rashford under the current circumstances.
Rio Ferdinand’s Verdict: “No Way Back”
Speaking on his YouTube channel Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former Manchester United defender expressed his belief that Rashford’s relationship with the club is irreparably damaged.
“For someone to question your application, to question you giving 100% for the team, saying you’re lacking effort and taking shortcuts, that’s a damning comment,” Ferdinand stated. “There’s no way back for Marcus after that. Allowing him back would send the wrong message to the squad, suggesting players can take their foot off the gas and still return.”
Transfer Speculation Looms Over Rashford
Rashford has been linked with an exit from Old Trafford during the January transfer window. While AC Milan is reportedly out of contention, Barcelona remains a possible destination, albeit dependent on their ability to adjust their squad.
The 27-year-old forward was at his peak during the 2022/23 season, scoring 30 goals. He also surpassed 20 goals in two of the three preceding seasons, proving his ability as a top-level scorer. Despite his recent struggles, Rashford showed glimpses of form under Amorim, scoring in the coach’s first game in charge against Ipswich Town and netting twice against Everton a week later.
What’s Next for Rashford?
As the January transfer window nears its conclusion, Rashford’s future remains uncertain. Will he leave Manchester United for a fresh start, or will he work to prove himself once again at Old Trafford?
