English Sides Await Tough Challenge in Knockout Stage
With the Europa League play-off ties now concluded, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur know their potential opponents ahead of the last 16 draw. Both English clubs secured direct qualification through the group stage but now face challenging fixtures as they aim for European success.
Man Utd & Tottenham’s Europa League Journey So Far
Manchester United finished third in their group, collecting 18 points from eight matches, while Tottenham trailed closely behind, finishing one spot lower with 17 points. Due to their similar group stage standings, both teams share the same pool of possible opponents in the upcoming draw.
Before the play-offs, the list of potential matchups included AZ Alkmaar, Galatasaray, Real Sociedad, and Midtjylland. However, after Thursday’s decisive games, only two teams remain as possible opponents:
- AZ Alkmaar – The Dutch side secured their place in the next round with a surprise victory over Turkish champions Galatasaray.
- Real Sociedad – The La Liga club triumphed over Danish side Midtjylland to reach the last 16.
Real Sociedad’s Confident Approach
Real Sociedad midfielder Brais Méndez issued a statement ahead of the draw, making it clear that his side does not fear either English club.
“We don’t care who we play. They are two rivals with incredible names, but if we want to go far, we have to beat the best. I’m not afraid of either of them.”
With such a bold message from the Spanish side, the upcoming fixtures promise to be intense battles.
Who Will United & Spurs Face?
