- Left-Back Priority: Ruben Amorim has made signing a new left-back a key focus for Manchester United this month.
- Nuno Mendes Linked: PSG’s Nuno Mendes has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford as Amorim seeks reinforcements.
- Contract Renewal Expected: Mendes is now leaning towards signing a new contract with PSG after being impressed by manager Luis Enrique’s tactical adjustments.
Amorim’s Left-Back Hunt
Manchester United’s pursuit of a new left-back has hit a roadblock as Nuno Mendes appears increasingly likely to stay at Paris Saint-Germain. Ruben Amorim, who expressed his desire to strengthen the left side of his defense in November, had identified Mendes as a top target for January.
The 22-year-old, who initially showed interest in a reunion with Amorim after their time together at Sporting CP, has now shifted focus towards renewing his contract with PSG. French publication L’Equipe reports that Mendes’ representatives are prioritizing a new deal, having been impressed with recent tactical adjustments under Luis Enrique that have allowed the full-back greater attacking freedom.
PSG’s Retention Push
Despite strong interest from Manchester United, PSG have been resolute in their efforts to retain Mendes. Manager Luis Enrique confirmed on Friday that Mendes has remained unaffected by transfer speculation, stating, “I see him very well.”
This shift in Mendes’ stance means that United are likely to need to look elsewhere for their desired left-back reinforcement. Amorim had been keen to replicate the success of his wing-back system used during his time at Sporting, with Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot continuing to fill in at left-back for now, especially with Luke Shaw frequently sidelined due to injury.
Future Targets
While Mendes appears set to stay at PSG, Manchester United will continue to scout potential alternatives for their left-back position. Amorim will likely need to explore other targets as the January transfer window progresses.
