Kyle Walker, the experienced full-back, has officially joined AC Milan on a six-month loan deal, with an option for the Italian club to purchase him for €5m (£4.2m) this summer. The 34-year-old leaves Manchester City after an eight-year spell, during which he achieved immense success under Pep Guardiola.

Walker Opens Up About His Conversation with Pep Guardiola

Walker admitted that his decision to leave Manchester City wasn’t easy, especially when it came to discussing it with Pep Guardiola. “It wasn’t a very comfortable conversation,” Walker revealed. “Pep and I have great respect for each other. He knows what I brought to the team, not just on the pitch but also off it, with the atmosphere I helped create.”

Walker had been a mainstay in Guardiola’s squad, making 319 appearances since his arrival in 2017 from Tottenham Hotspur for £50m. However, with the rise of younger talents like Rico Lewis and the versatility of players such as Matheus Nunes, Walker found his minutes on the pitch dwindling.

“I could have stayed and honored my contract because that’s the kind of person I am,” Walker said. “But at this stage in my career, I needed a new challenge. Moving to AC Milan just felt right. It’s one of those opportunities you can’t say no to.”

The Sheffield United academy graduate explained that his decision was influenced by conversations with former players who regretted never playing abroad. “I’ve spoken to many ex-players who said they wished they had experienced football in another country. When Milan came knocking, it felt like the right move. It’s a big club with a rich history, and I had a gut feeling about this decision.”

Walker also expressed his gratitude towards the Manchester City staff and fans: “City was my family – from the cooks to the cleaners, the kit men and physios. I hope I made a positive impact there. But now, I’m looking forward to contributing to Milan and playing more football.”
