Bayern Munich’s Determination to Retain Kimmich
Bayern Munich’s sporting director Christoph Freund has expressed optimism about Joshua Kimmich staying at the club, despite significant interest from European giants such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, and Manchester City. Kimmich’s current contract expires in June, making him one of the most sought-after midfielders in world football.
Freund addressed the ongoing rumors following Bayern’s narrow 2-1 victory over Freiburg, where Kimmich’s expertly delivered corner led to Kim Min-jae’s decisive goal. Speaking to Sky Germany, Freund said, “I’m positive that he will ultimately decide to continue playing for FC Bayern.”
A Decade of Excellence at Bayern
Kimmich has been a cornerstone of Bayern’s dominance over the past decade. The 29-year-old has showcased his versatility, excelling as both a holding midfielder and a right-back. This season, under manager Vincent Kompany, Kimmich has been indispensable, playing every single Bundesliga minute in midfield until he filled in at right-back against Freiburg.
His importance to the team contrasts starkly with the treatment he received during Thomas Tuchel’s tenure. Tuchel’s public calls for “a proper holding No. 6” reportedly coincided with stalled contract negotiations, fueling speculation about Kimmich’s future.
Transfer Interest from Europe’s Elite
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, and Manchester City are all keen on acquiring Kimmich, who would become available on a free transfer this summer. Liverpool and Barcelona have reportedly made significant efforts to lure the German international, with Real Madrid joining the race recently.
Despite the mounting interest, Kimmich has remained tight-lipped about his future. Speaking to BILD after the Freiburg game, he emphasized his unwillingness to provide frequent updates, saying, “I made a relatively clear statement two weeks ago. There’s no change in the situation now. I’m not going to comment on it every three days.”
