Sterling Faces a Defining Moment at Arsenal
Ian Wright: “Sterling Must Seize This Opportunity”
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has urged Raheem Sterling to take full advantage of the unexpected chance he now has at the Emirates, warning that his career could fade away if he fails to deliver.
Sterling, who arrived on loan from Chelsea last summer, has struggled to earn regular game time under Mikel Arteta. However, with Arsenal facing a major injury crisis, the 30-year-old winger could be handed a lifeline.
With Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus all sidelined, Arsenal lack attacking options, potentially opening the door for Sterling to prove himself.
“This is the time where he should buckle down and say, ‘I have to make this work’,” Wright said on the Stick to Football podcast.
“Otherwise, he’ll go out with a whimper.”
Can Sterling Step Up as Arsenal’s Striker?

Arsenal’s injury problems have forced Arteta to get creative with his lineup. Against Leicester City, Leandro Trossard was used in a central role, while Sterling started on the left.
However, as Arsenal pushed for a late goal, Arteta substituted Sterling, opting to throw on midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift striker instead.
This move has raised concerns about Sterling’s role in the squad, with Gary Neville questioning whether he has the “football intelligence” to adapt to the vacant striker position.
“The last time I saw him come on and make an impact was against Manchester United,” Wright added. “That’s what you want to see – just come on and try to make something happen.”
Will Arteta Trust Sterling Against West Ham?
With Arsenal set to face West Ham on Saturday, the big question remains:
- Will Arteta give Sterling another chance to prove himself?
- Or will Mikel Merino be deployed as the striker once again?
If Arteta chooses Merino in the central role and shifts Trossard to the left, Sterling could find himself out of the lineup completely.
Interestingly, Pep Guardiola once believed Sterling had the potential to be a top-class striker, after a strong pre-season showing in 2019. But with Arteta working under Guardiola at the time, it seems unlikely that he still sees Sterling as a viable option for the role.
What’s Next for Raheem Sterling?
Sterling’s future remains uncertain, and this could be his last big opportunity to revive his career at the top level. If he fails to impress, he risks becoming a fringe player at a time when Arsenal desperately need attacking firepower.
