Barcelona Coach Defends Casado Amid Transfer Speculation
- Chelsea reportedly monitoring Barcelona starlet Marc Casado
- Casado’s game time has decreased with Frenkie de Jong’s return
- Hansi Flick insists Casado remains an important part of his squad
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has addressed speculation surrounding Marc Casado’s future, following reports linking the young midfielder with a potential move to Chelsea. Despite limited playing time in recent weeks, Flick maintains that Casado is still a key part of Barcelona’s plans.
Casado’s Breakout Season at Barcelona
From La Masia to First-Team Regular
The La Masia graduate has enjoyed a breakout campaign, making 30 appearances so far this season. His rise was fueled by early-season injuries to Frenkie de Jong and Gavi, which provided him with a chance to impress.
However, as De Jong regained full fitness, Casado has seen his game time decrease significantly. The Dutch international has started three of Barcelona’s last five La Liga games, replacing Casado at halftime in the other two.
Hansi Flick’s Stance on Casado’s Role

“Casado is Doing Well, But De Jong is Exceptional”
Despite rumors of Chelsea’s interest, Flick was quick to defend Casado, making it clear that his reduced minutes are not a reflection of his performances.
“He has not done anything wrong. I am also speaking with him,” Flick told reporters.
“At the moment, Frenkie is doing really well, contributing in key moments, and that’s what we need. But Casado is also performing well.”
Flick also emphasized that squad rotation is natural, and competition for places is part of Barcelona’s structure.
“It’s not about one player being better than the other. Everyone has their role, and when they play, they must perform. That’s normal in a team like this.”
Chelsea’s Interest & Casado’s Future
Could Casado Leave Barcelona?
Chelsea’s interest in Casado is in line with their strategy of recruiting young talent, but the midfielder’s long-term contract with Barcelona could complicate any potential transfer.
- Contract until 2028
- €100m (£83m) release clause
- Still viewed as part of Barcelona’s future plans
Unless Chelsea are willing to pay a significant fee, a summer transfer seems unlikely—especially with Flick still backing Casado publicly.
What’s Next for Casado?
Will He Stay & Fight for His Place?
With the Champions League and La Liga title race heating up, Casado will need to prove his worth in the remaining games of the season.
Should he force his way back into Flick’s plans, a transfer might not be on the table. However, if his playing time remains limited, interest from clubs like Chelsea could become more serious in the summer window.
