David Coote, a former Premier League referee, has spoken candidly about the personal struggles that contributed to his dismissal in December 2024. The 41-year-old revealed how hiding his sexuality and the relentless demands of modern football led to significant challenges, including a brief period of drug use.

Coote’s Sexuality and the Pressure of Hiding It

In an interview with The Sun, Coote admitted that concealing his sexuality for many years deeply affected his mental health.
“I felt a deep sense of shame during my teenage years,” Coote said. “I didn’t come out to my parents until I was 21 and to my friends at 25. I hid my emotions as a young referee and my sexuality as well. While this might be a good quality for a referee, it’s terrible for a person.”

Coote added that his struggles with self-esteem and identity were compounded by the abuse he faced as a referee. “As a referee, you’re constantly under scrutiny. Adding my sexuality to that would have been overwhelming. Discrimination remains a significant issue in football and society,” he said.

Drug Use as an Escape from Stress

A photograph of Coote snorting cocaine was published by The Sun, sparking controversy. Coote acknowledged the incident and explained it was a way to cope with the pressures of his role.
“It wasn’t something I was reliant on,” Coote clarified. “It was an escape route during an incredibly stressful time in my life. I feel a deep sense of shame about it.”

Coote also opened up about personal tragedies in 2023, including the sudden loss of his mother and his uncle’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease. At the same time, his workload intensified, with over 90 matches in the 2023/24 season, including high-pressure tournaments like the Euros and Olympics.
“The relentlessness of the schedule gave me no time to process anything,” Coote said. “I was struggling to balance my personal life with the demands of football.”

A Message to Others Struggling

Reflecting on his experiences, Coote shared a powerful message: “If you’re struggling, seek help and talk to someone. Bottling up your feelings will only lead to more challenges. I’ve learned this the hard way.”

Coote has decided to step back from the public eye to focus on his well-being. “I’ll spend time with my family and friends and work on moving forward in the best way possible,” he stated.
